Coal is the most polluting source of energy and the coal industry is one of the main contributors to climate change.

According to a report by Swedwatch, several Swedish companies have enjoyed export guarantees in recent years and have contributed to the expansion of the coal industry in countries that are already heavily dependent on coal, including Volvo and Scania.

Export credits, or guarantees, work as a kind of insurance, so that Swedish companies that invest will be paid if the companies run the risk that the countries with which they do business will not pay them.

Minister of Foreign Trade: “Large projects”

In total, the companies have received guarantees of more than 1.9 billion SEK since 2016. Money that has gone to business with Indonesia, South Africa and Mongolia. Most of the money, 1.2 billion Swedish crowns, went to business with Indonesia, the world’s largest coal exporting country.

– We have decided that credits will be phased out and will be phased out by 2022, but it is not possible to close overnight. These are big projects and big commitments, says Foreign Trade Minister Anna Hallberg (S), to SVT.
