Around 5 pm, the police were called to Sturefors, south of Linköping, after an alarm about a house fire.
But no fire appeared in the direction.
– When we got to the scene quickly enough, we got ahead of the rescue service. By then, the fire had already been extinguished by someone, probably an individual, says Thomas Agnevik, a press spokesman for the police in the Eastern region.
At home, they were greeted by a lifeless woman. Private individuals at the scene performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation in an attempt to save his life. But later a doctor declared her dead.
The woman, who is 65 years old, lived alone. His family members have been notified.
Police investigate death
Police say the fire is believed to have been caused by a candle that burned out.
– Now we will try to investigate this. There is no suspected crime, but as there are unclear circumstances surrounding a death, we are investigating this, says Thomas Agnevik.
During the night, the apartment is cordoned off while forensic technicians conduct an investigation. At the same time, the police have conducted interrogations with people who have been at the scene.
– The next step is that it will be a forensic autopsy where the cause of death is expected to be revealed. It’s probably the next most important piece of the puzzle in this investigation, says Thomas Agnevik.
Has the number of fire alarms increased in December?
– The rescue service in Östergötland has come out and warned that this is the month most affected by fires. But I can’t say that there has been a huge increase during the time I worked.
