German prosecutors launched an investigation into alleged murders after a patient died at a hospital who was subjected to an attack by hackers.
The IT system of the Düsseldorf University Hospital was the subject of a cyberattack last week.
During the attack, the hospital lost contact with its ambulances and a critically ill woman was sent, as a result of the uncontactable ambulances, to a hospital located an hour’s drive away. The woman died shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Prosecutors are now investigating whether those responsible for the cyber attack were guilty of homicide. If the as-yet-unidentified perpetrators were convicted of murder, it would be a unique verdict in the country.
There are suspicions that the cyberattack was directed at the Heinrich Heine University in the same city. In recent months, Germany has experienced the most cyberattacks on universities and research institutes. Among other things, the universities of the cities of Giessen, Cologne and Bochum have been exhibited.
