The summer saw a reduced spread of Covid-19 in Europe. But now the positive trend has been reversed.
Several countries, including France, Portugal, England, Hungary and the Czech Republic, have warned of an increased number of infections.
As recently as yesterday, 11,193 new corona cases were registered in Spain, which is the highest number since last spring. At the same time, in France, 9,784 new cases of infection were registered, the third highest number in history.
During a speech Thursday, Hans Kluge, WHO regional director, warns about development. It states that the increased spread in Europe is “very serious”.
– Weekly cases have now exceeded those reported when the pandemic peaked in Europe in March. Last week, the region’s total number of patients topped 300,000, Kluge says according to CNN.
Development warns
More than half of the countries in Europe have seen a 10% increase in new crown drops in two weeks. The number of infections is now between 40,000 and 50,000 cases per day.
– During spring and early summer, we could see the effect of strict deterrents. Our efforts, our sacrifices were worth it. In June, the number of new infections hit record lows. But the September numbers should serve as a wake-up call for all of us, Kluge says.
On Wednesday, another WHO regional director, Carissa Etienne, warned to follow Europe’s lead.
– We must be clear that openings that occur too soon give the virus more space to spread and put our population at greater risk. Look no further than Europe, he said then.
