The head of crisis preparedness of the WHO, of the World Health Organization, Mike Ryan, is positive about the tough new restrictions that the Swedish government announced on Monday.
– Mouth guards work, he told a news conference Monday.
At the same time, he thinks that Sweden should change in terms of mouth guards, which are recommended by the authorities in most other countries:
– We recommend that all countries in situations where there is an expansion of society to consider the use of mouth guards. Mouth guards work and work particularly well in environments where distance cannot be maintained, he replied to the SvD reporter during a press conference.

At the same time, he emphasized that mouth protection should be seen as a complement to other measures, such as keeping distance, washing hands, and avoiding crowds.
Mike Ryan mentions how the Swedes largely followed the advice of the authorities during the spring. But now that much of Europe is being hit by a second wave, many are already tired of the pandemic. So it is difficult to maintain the same discipline.
– Many countries are in the middle of a trip. They try to interpret all the information and do everything possible to protect their population. All decisions are made in good faith and based on evidence, said Mike Ryan.
The WHO chief praises the government for issuing stricter restrictions than those introduced during the worst pandemic weeks of the spring.
– Adapting and changing strategies is not a weakness, it is a strength. It takes courage to change your actions and realize that you need to add more. It is not a failure but a sign that the system is able to listen and adapt to a new reality that was not expected. This is not the time to point fingers, said Mike Ryan.
