It has been 17 days since the last public appearance of the President of Tanzania, John Magufuli. He is 61 years old and there are rumors that he has contracted covid-19. Despite this, the authorities do not comment on his whereabouts.

Just raising the question of where you are can lead to an arrest.

– Whatever happens, the government is obviously trying to buy time, says Nic Cheeseman, professor of democracy at the University of Birmingham.

Several high-ranking people in Tanzania have recently died or become ill with what is described as respiratory problems or pneumonia. Last month, the Finance Minister appeared at a press conference where he coughed and gasped for breath.

The Tanzanian government stopped reporting statistics on infected and dead in covid-19 in May of last year. The country had 509 infected and 21 dead.
