I am 47 years old and lately I have had a lot of menstruation, I even have iron deficiency. What food should I eat to get iron?
// Karin
Dietitian Sofia Antonsson responds
Iron is found in a variety of foods and in different forms. Red meat and intestinal foods are high in iron, and the variety found in animal foods is easier for the body to absorb compared to iron in vegetables. That doesn’t mean you need to eat animal foods to get iron.
There is iron in many plant foods such as legumes, nuts, seeds, kale, broccoli, sourdough bread, and nuts.

To increase iron absorption, it is good to eat something that contains vitamin C at the same time. Finish the meal with, for example, a kiwi or an orange. If your iron value wouldn’t increase with the help of diet, there are supplements to buy.
Fluids are generally gentler on the stomach, so try one over a period of time.
