One of Sweden’s biggest mistakes this spring was not being fast enough on the ball.
So an immediate but temporary UK entry ban is good.
But there is still a risk that the new variant of the virus will spread to Sweden.
If you are not here yet.
When the first crown falls were reported in Sweden On January 31, a traveler from Wuhan itself contacted infection control authorities and was quickly isolated.
This exemplary action lulled us with a kind of false assurance that Sweden was in control. Then there was the open hatch. When sports holiday travelers and other travelers returned to Sweden a few weeks later, no fever or corona temperature tests were taken. Tourists from Central Europe and other EU countries were able to enter uncontrollably despite the spread of the infection to Europe and the United States.
The result was a widespread social infection in Sweden which in turn resulted in the high Swedish death rates.
Then he said of both state epidemiologists Anders Tegnell and Prime Minister Stefan Löfven, that border closure offered no protection. It was enough for the sick to stay at home.
But the experience of almost a year with the corona pandemic shows, on the contrary, that border closures played a very important role for countries that managed to keep the infection at a low level.
Closed edges are not the same as keeping the jaw in. All countries have an obligation to receive their own citizens. Also, there may be business trips that are so important that they are allowed.
Discovered already in September
However, countries such as China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, New Zealand, and Australia have and do apply strict quarantine regulations. No one can be quarantined at home. Combined, but aggressive testing and infection monitoring.
For Sweden today, the situation is different. We already have a very extensive spread of the infection and closing the borders now would not have the same effect at all.
But in light of the even more contagious variant of the virus discovered in UK at least a temporary entry ban and stopped flights from the UK could be a good move.
Given how difficult the Swedish healthcare system is, it is very important not to import an infection from one that appears to be an even more contagious variant of the virus.
However, this presupposes that the virus variant no longer exists in Sweden. According to the BBC, the mutation was discovered in southern England as early as September, but only now has it become clear that it is 70 percent more contagious than the most common type of virus.
If this is true, the risk is of course imminent that the virus variant already exists in Sweden. Although it has not yet been discovered by the Swedish Public Health Agency.
The most contagious coronavirus has already been detected in the Netherlands and Denmark, among other places, further underscoring the risk that it has already spread to many countries.
Unwanted Christmas present
But before we know it, it may be worth temporarily stopping traveling from the UK. In that case, those admitted must be quarantined for the ban to take full effect.
Perhaps it is time for Sweden to try the mandatory variant of quarantine in special supervised hotels.
The coronavirus has already proven extremely contagious in its original form. The even more contagious variant is a rare unwanted Christmas present. One consolation in the pain is that it appears that people are not getting sicker from the mutation and that vaccines, experts say, should also bite into the new variant.
In general, you can see that Europe is much more alert now than it was last spring. Several leading countries such as France and Germany already decided yesterday to ban flights from the UK and many more are expected to follow. Ferry connections to and from France were closed at midnight, as were the trains under the English Channel. Surely this also made Sweden act.
Several countries outside of Europe have already introduced bans, including Saudi Arabia, Argentina and Canada.
This type of decision depends on each country, but given the free movement within the Union, it is an advantage that all EU countries apply the same rules. The situation in the Wild West this spring with several border closures made the EU appear divided and confused.
