– Geologists have made measurements indicating that there may be houses with missing persons there (in the landslide zone), said Tomas Norberg, liaison officer of the so-called Nusar team of the Greater Gothenburg Rescue Service, Friday morning. .

A dead person was found in one of the houses, Norberg says in a video message later that day.

“Like yogurt”

The Nusar team is a special function of the Swedish Civil Protection and Emergency Planning Agency, MSB, and has specialized competence for search and rescue operations in urban environments. When MSB received a request from Norway to assist in the rescue work, the Gothenburg team was able to quickly go to Norway.

Previously, the rescue management made the assessment that there was too great a risk of entering the landslide area.

– It has been like yogurt so all access has been by helicopter, and it has made everything more difficult, says Tomas Norberg.

But after geologists made measurements showing that the risk of new landslides in one corner of the landslide area is quite small, the rescue team was able to enter with polystyrene plates for support under their feet.

– Work continues tonight and tomorrow. Nusar’s Swedish team continues their efforts until the onset of darkness, after which the plan is to finish and return to Sweden, says Tomas Norberg.

The possibility diminishes

Rescue dogs are used in the search. The entire landslide zone is three kilometers long and is located in a valley. Towards the crater itself, there is a high rim. The crater is 300 times 700 meters long.

Tomas Norberg says intensive rescue work has been carried out 24 hours a day and it has been frustrating that it was not possible to enter the area earlier.

– Previously, firefighters only held various places in the avalanche to search.

Despite the fact that more than two days have passed since the landslide occurred, he hopes that the missing will be found alive, even if the possibility diminishes with each passing hour.

– We are working against the clock, he says.
