We want to see additional state support for small municipalities.

The Left Party wants to invest 1.9 billion a year in additional support for small municipalities. This is what Jonas Sjöstedt says in his summer speech, the last of the party leader before leaving office in October.

– In several small rural municipalities in Sweden, the situation is acute, the cuts are desperate, the municipal tax is already too high, says Jonas Sjöstedt in his summer speech.

It describes how community services are dismantled and depopulation accelerated, how schools are closed and savings are made on caring for the elderly in many small municipalities.

The Left Party wants to see additional state support of up to 12 million crowns per year for municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. But it should not only be based on the population, but also on the municipal tax rate. Above all, it is proposed that support be directed to sparsely populated municipalities with high taxes and a declining population.

– Annie Lööf and Stefan Löfven seem to ignore Hyltebruk and Nordmaling, but we don’t. We see your challenges and we want to give you the opportunity to solve them, says Sjöstedt.

In total, the investment is estimated to cost the state 1.9 billion SEK per year.

The summer speech from Umeå will be the last before Sjöstedt resigns as party leader in October. He says he will “take advantage of every day” and “take the fight.” Already in the speech, he took the opportunity to send a boot to the government and the coalition parties.

– Since the Social Democrats chose to go to the right and cooperate with the Center Party and the Liberals, tax cuts have piled up on top of each other. The times that welfare has received extra money, it has often been at the request of the Left Party.

Jonas Sjöstedt says the Left Party “has run over the government” before to get what it wants, and that it is prepared to do it again.

Among other things, Sjöstedt is critical of the controversial LAS investigation, saying the party will act if the government goes ahead with the proposals.

– We will not wait to act until the government formally presents a bill. The moment it becomes clear that Stefan Löfven intends to present the research proposal, he will no longer be able to be Sweden’s prime minister, he says.

The Left’s Proposal for Additional Support

The left-wing parties propose that municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants receive additional support from the state.

The grant will amount to up to 12 million SEK per year, and is estimated to cost the state 1.9 billion SEK per year.

Support should also be based, for example, on the municipal tax rate to be more precise, as proposed by the Left Party.
