According to Ekot, several employees testify that nursing home staff were not listened to when they tried to point out deficiencies to management.
The staff must also have experienced that nursing homes tried to hide the seriousness of the situation. Someone also testified about fear of retaliation and that employers threatened to fire if information about the infection came out.
Complaint to Ivo
Sweden’s Health and Care Inspectorate, Ivo, has received more than 800 advice, comments and complaints about nursing homes during the pandemic.
Some are that the elderly were not isolated when they had symptoms until it was confirmed that they were infected, that mouth guards and other protective equipment were sufficient for long distances, and that staff passed between wards.
“Make me worry”
Anna-Karin Nyqvist, Ivo’s Unit Manager, comments on the staff’s fear of Ekot:
– That he does not handle deviations in a business, that he is not allowed to write deviations, that he does not investigate deviations, I am concerned that deviation management is a way of monitoring the business and being able to take action when deficiencies are identified and many times when personal an extremely important source of information.
