An unusual silver treasure has recently been found in Täby.

Archaeologists have unearthed finds believed to be over 1,000 years old; some treasures are believed to come from the Middle East.

– It was absolutely incredible, says archaeologist Maria Lingström of the State Historical Museums.

Archaeologists unearthed finds with a metal detector

Stockholm has been searching for treasures since the 18th century, but few have ever managed to find them before. But now the luck seems to have changed.

In June, archaeologist Maria Lingström was searching with her metal detector during an excavation in Täby, Stockholm.

Suddenly the detector turned on and he quickly realized that he had found something special.

– I have a great snapshot. I understood that something was hidden in the ground, he says.

The answer to what was hidden would be delayed until August 5, when archaeologists from the State Historical Museum decided to unearth the find.

On the ground they found a ceramic pot. In it were eight necklaces, a linen bag with twelve pendants of coins, two bracelets, two pearls, and a simple silver ring.

Some of the finds come from France, Germany and the Middle East.

– It was completely incredible, it feels like something that I will only be able to experience once in my life, says Maria Lingström.

More than 1000 years

The findings were made a few decimeters below, on the ground next to a farm with just over 20 houses.

– The coins are from the late 900s and the necklaces may be a bit older. But we think the tax was lowered during the 1000s, says Maria Lingström.

– One of the coins is completely unique and comes from Normandy. It has only been depicted in an 18th century book, but the coin has never been found before.

Several silver coins were found during the excavation, some originating from the Middle East.

May end in a museum

After the discovery, archaeologists began speculating about the treasure.

– The find was made under a house, and we believe it was a craftsmen’s house, where a merchant lived.

– The tax was hidden and the most common theory that “the money is hidden in the mattress” is usually that there was a war.

Objects are now preserved and will be analyzed. Silver is now believed to be of interest to various experts.

– I think the finds will be exhibited in the Östermalm Historical Museum, says Maria Lingström.
