The spread of the infection has accelerated again. During week 8, the number of covid-19 cases increased by 25 percent. Doctors who control infections urge everyone to take responsibility for stopping the spread.
The Västra Götaland region now announces that the spread of covid-19 is increasing again. During week 8, 5,964 new cases were found in the region, an increase of 25 percent.
The increase is greater in Gothenburg than the surrounding municipality, but the spread of the infection has increased throughout the region. It increases the most at the age of 10 to 19, an increase of 57 percent compared to the previous week, according to Smittskydd Västra Götaland.
Matter of concern
Infection control physician Thomas Wahlberg compares the development to how the first and second waves of the pandemic began. You see a cause for concern.
– Many go to great lengths to keep the spread of infection low, but we have a common responsibility and our decisions have consequences. I want everyone to follow the national and regional recommendations. Reduce your contacts with others. Keep your distance in all positions and wear mouth guards if this is not possible. And always wear mouth guards on public transportation, says infection control physician Thomas Wahlberg in a press release.
High sanitary burden
In the last week, the need for hospital care has not changed much, but it is at a very high level with a great burden for intensive care.
– As more and more people become infected with covid-19, we unfortunately have to take into account the fact that more and more people will also become seriously ill and need hospital care. Pressure on medical care followed the spread of the infection throughout the pandemic. I want to call on everyone to do everything possible to reduce the infection, we need help to prevent a new wave, says the director of health and medical care Ann Söderström in the same press release.
The number of people treated for covid-19 in hospitals in the region was 321 on the morning of March 2. 53 of them are cared for in an intensive care unit.
On the positive side, there are slightly fewer people over the age of 80 who get so sick that they need hospital care. The reason is claimed to be a vaccination effect.
More vaccinations per week
Depending on the region, vaccination in nursing homes and people who have municipal home health care and their household contacts have come a long way. Many of them receive their second injection a week, as well as some of the priority health personnel. Vaccination of municipal nursing and care staff is also proceeding as planned.
A total of 34,880 doses of vaccine will be sent to vaccinators in the region during the week. Depending on the region, all health centers receive enough vaccines to be able to administer the first dose to people with home care and their household contacts this week or next.
– The demand for vaccines is even greater than the supply and VGR vaccinates with all the vaccines we receive. If there are more vaccines, the vaccination rate will also increase, says vaccination coordinator Kristine Rygge in a press release.
