Venezuelans who fled to Colombia this week accuse soldiers in their home country of killing civilians, burning houses, looting and other abuses.

Thousands of refugees began arriving Sunday since the Venezuelan army launched an offensive against armed guerrillas in La Victoria, a town near the border with Colombia.

– They raided our house and took everything from us. When they arrived, they broke everything, says mechanic José Castillo, who on Friday with his pregnant wife and twelve-year-old daughter sat down safely in Colombia.

– I couldn’t stay because they killed people. They killed some neighbors and dressed them in uniforms of the Venezuelan army.

Reuters has not been able to verify information from the mechanic and others who showed moving photos of corpses in uniform with weapons in hand.

The government has not yet ruled on the accusations, which, however, will be investigated.
