In Västra Götaland, as in many other regions of Sweden, stricter restrictions have been introduced due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases.
The number of people tested for covid-19 has never been higher in the region, but Ann Söderström, director of health and healthcare at Västra Götaland, says the region has reached maximum capacity to test for covid-19 .
– We also touch the ceiling, because we say that we cannot increase more right now. But we have a dialogue with our laboratories and, above all, Unilabs has announced that they will be able to increase their capacity in the next week or weeks, explains Ann Söderström to GP.
“Capacity is not enough”
Ann Söderström tells the newspaper that between 25,000 and 30,000 people are tested weekly for COVID-19, a figure they want to maintain even after the increase in COVID cases.
– We can hold on, and I’m very happy about that, so that we don’t have to cut back on the current situation. But it remains true that capacity is not enough. There are many who testify that they don’t have time even though they want to go get tested. So our appeal is that we primarily test all people with symptoms. If you do not have symptoms, we cannot now, when we are crowded, say that they should go by, says Ann Söderström to GP.
According to Ann Söderström, it is unknown exactly how many are denied the test. She tells GP that, among other things, there are those who put themselves to the test, but then it is too late and that it is “exaggerated”.
– I received information that approximately 80 percent receive a response within two days from the time the test was taken. That is, you take the test one day and the next day you get the answer. So most of them work for it, but it’s not good enough, Ann Söderström tells the newspaper.
