It is now clear how the Swedish Public Health Agency will distribute the first deliveries of covid-19 vaccines. The Västra Götaland region will have access to 101,500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine in January, according to a press release.

– We are ready to receive the vaccine doses and we are well positioned in our planning to be able to offer vaccines to the priority groups that the Public Health Agency has decided upon, says Kristine Rygge, Vaccine Coordinator, Västra Götaland Region, in the statement from press.

Two doses for each patient

The region will follow the order of priority recommended by the Swedish Public Health Agency:

  • People who live in special homes for the elderly or who have home care.
  • Nursing and support staff who work close to the people covered by the first bullet.
  • Close family contacts of people receiving home care.

– Vaccines should be given in two doses to each patient at intervals of several weeks and we will ensure that those who received dose one also receive dose two, says Kristine Rygge in the press release.

The vaccine has not yet been approved.

The distribution is based on both production and delivery capacity and the proportion of regions that are over 70 years old. The vaccine will be manufactured by three different suppliers and these are Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca.

After the first distribution, there will be additional doses of vaccine in February, just over half a million.

– This is preliminary information from the Swedish Public Health Agency and currently the vaccines have not yet been approved. But as soon as the vaccines are approved and can be delivered to us, we are ready to begin vaccination, Kristine Rygge says in the press release.
