Despite the ongoing corona pandemic, the Karjala Tournament will be played in early November.
Russia comes with a youth national team and the Swedish team consists of only SHL players, with the exception of Timrås Jonathan Dahlén. This is because the crown pandemic makes it difficult for foreign league players to join due to travel.
Federation captain Johan Garpenlöv presented the squad on Monday, which includes most of the newcomers. Here he comments on his selected players:
– He was with us last year and I like what he showed then. Quiet and safe. It could bring your Rögle level to our level. He is very useful to us both in defensive and offensive games. Very skilled with the puck and starts the game from below. He doesn’t have many international matches, but he’s been around the world and played on many levels, so he has experience.
Nils Lundkvist, Luleå HF
– He played JVM and was very good before going in and playing Beijer Hockey Games. He came in and did a great job, we think. He is skilled offensively and has an advantage in offensive play without losing in defensive play. Very suitable. We want him with us this season as much as possible. I think the season has also started well in Luleå.
Arvid Lundberg, Skellefteå AIK
– A more defensive round trip. I think he’s developing his offensive game all the time. We use it a lot in defensive situations and we feel safe with it.
Jesper Sellgren, Frölunda HC
– Young and promising, very skilled at skateboarding. I think he has gone one step further in Frölunda, especially in his offensive game. Follow the attacks in a completely different way. He’s becoming a much better offensive player. The steps it has taken so far are promising.
Adam Ollas-Mattsson, IF Malmö Redhawks
– A guy from Stockholm who has been around the world a bit. A great play more oriented to defense. He gets a stop on the game and is very good without a puck. He has the ability to start the game with a good first pass. He arrives as a rookie and will show that he is at our level.
Joel Persson, Växjö Lakers HC
– Last year he was in the AHL and NHL and played. He is returning to Swedish hockey and I think he is well on his way to his level. Again a very skilled player from whom we benefit on offense but also to start the game. I think he’s developed his defensive game and he’s gotten a lot better at the game without the puck.
Forward:
Max Friberg, Frölunda HC
– He was with us in the first tournament last year, then he couldn’t be with more because Frölunda went far in the Champions Hockey League. We like what we saw of Max in the first tournament. He is a team player who always comes into play and we use him more in boxplay and to stabilize our defensive game. Play with a big heart and you are welcome back to our team.
Lias Andersson, HV71 (Los Angeles Kings)
– He is back in Swedish hockey after suffering a minor sprain in the Rangers organization. I think it got better and better last year. This year he has had the opportunity for a good summer training and has a prominent role at HV. He can take it with him. It’s been there before and I know what it can do. I hope you come and move this team forward.
Gustav Rydahl, Färjestad BK
– He fits into international hockey with his speed and willingness to sacrifice. He is a player who may want more defensively, but believes he is on the right track offensively. It has a small size which is good on our stage.
Jesper Frödén, Skellefteå AIK
– A little lazy lazy. He has played for fully Swedish teams and Skellefteå has done a good job with him. A top player and it will be exciting to see if he can get us his shot on goal. He’s a rookie, and like most people who reach this level, you may not expect him to dominate at this level.
Pontus Holmberg, Växjö Lakers HC
– Had a good first year at Växjö. Something was missing and he has put on a few kilos and has become stronger, more senior in his body and his game on the ice. I think it has made great strides and it is the one in Växjö that has taken the biggest step in terms of development. A two-way center who can throw forward, but also play well on defense. Very strong with disc. Exciting players.
Michael Lindqvist, Färjestad BK
– A great player and scorer who does well with us. Now I hope that I can take more steps and really become a threat in every change at the international level. You have the opportunity to do so. He had a bit of a tough time last year when he suffered a serious injury at the end of the season. He has returned strong.
Linus Ölund, Brynäs IF
– Back to Swedish hockey last season after a little affair with the AHL in the Pittsburgh organization. A two-way hub. Very understanding in the game. I think he has taken a giant step forward this season towards his return. He seems so much faster on the road and more involved in the game. We believe that he makes his teammates much better and has a clear role with us. More on the defensive side, but also that he can produce forward.
Jonatan Berggren, Skellefteå AIK
– He’s probably the offensive player who has made a great trip this season. He has been with most, if not all, of the national teams up to Tre Kronor. He’s had some injury issues on the road, but he’s an incredibly skilled player. More about skill and understanding of the game than a scorer, but an offensive player who participates and produces offensively.
Emil Sylvegård, Malmö Redhawks
– Retired again. A player who fits better in international hockey, we think. His physical part, his size, his power, his strength on the puck, but also this respect for the opponent. Defend his teammates, he’s there. A team player at your fingertips, we believe. He has done well in that position and it is good to have him back on our team.
Jonathan Dahlén, Timrå IK
– A player who plays in the Allsvenskan. He had a straight career, went to the NHL and tried to take a spot. It did not go well and came back a little crooked. He has had to strengthen himself both on the ice and physically. He had a great season last year. So far this season he has really shown that he performs offensively, but I think you can see that he is physically stronger and participates more in the defensive game and improves there. Now is the time for Jonathan to step up and show that he has the Three Crowns. I think he bravely manages it.
Anton Wedin, HV71
– He has been in the Chicago organization and has gained experience in that game there. He’s back and he’s still got his speed, his ability offensively, but I think he’s gotten stronger in the game physically. Stronger on the stick, in close matches and easier to get the puck into goal. From what I’ve seen so far, I think we have a better player here now than when he left.
Leon Bristedt, Rögle BK
– He was with last year. Skillful, intense, and helpful to us in many different situations. It’s a contributing factor to Rögle’s good start. León is a player who gives us a lot of energy in the team with his way of playing. That type of player is always valuable to the team.
Jacob Nilsson, Färjestad BK
– He also went to the Chicago organization and has gained experience in that game there. He’s back and he’s making his way into our game here at home. In recent games he has reached the level that I hope he will maintain. Very interesting center that can play on both sides of the disc. Skillful, strong in close combat and we can use it in many different situations.
Daniel Zaar, Rögle BK
– He has gotten involved and done well with us. He is a top level player offensively. A scorer who I think has also taken physical steps. Many of these players have had the ability offensively, they have scored their goals. But when it’s crowded and cramped, you may not have really handled those situations. Daniel has built himself physically but he also dares to stick his nose in those situations and now he has the opportunity to prove it again.
