Results of the preliminary elections in the United States
Can Republican Donald Trump remain President of the United States or will Democrat Joe Biden take office? Follow the election results here with us, state by state.
There are 538 electoral votes at stake and when a candidate has obtained 270 of them, the election is decided. On the map below, a state appears in red if Trump wins it and blue if Biden wins it. Press the status for more information.
Below the map you can see the position right now.
Each box in the graphic above is an electoral vote. So you can see how many electoral votes are left to be taken (in gray) and how many candidates have won so far. Click on the grid to select a state and view the number of electoral votes (in yellow). On the pages you can see what proportion of the electoral votes each candidate has obtained.
The process
Below you can see the process in a line diagram. There, the states appear as they are ready and we record them on our charts. You can also play the sequence from the beginning by pressing the button below the graph. When one of the candidates reaches the thick line, the choice is decided.
Below you can see the details of the states: how many electoral votes they have and how they fared in the previous elections. You can choose what you want to see by checking inside or outside the boxes.

Method and sources
Even before all the votes have been counted, American media outlets announce which candidate a particular state is expected to win. Media company calculations are based not only on votes counted, but also on Election Day polls, opinion polls, and statistical analysis of data and how the state voted historically.
SVT follows major US media companies including AP, CNN, ABC, Fox, and the New York Times. When at least three of them predicted the same winner in a state, we colored the state on our map: red for Trump, blue for Biden. Before that, the state is gray.
Due to the pandemic, a record number of Americans have voted before or after the vote. This can affect when there is a final election result, as states have different rules on when and how votes are counted.
