An area of precipitation in the southwest carries snow over large parts of central Sweden and southern Norrland, with the risk of slipping and major traffic problems.
SMHI has issued a class 1 snow warning in Värmland, Örebro, Västmanland, Dalarna, Gävleborg, Västernorrland and Jämtland counties.
– This is an area of precipitation that has come from the southwest, so it is a fairly mild air and means that the rain and snow will be temperate during the day and in the afternoon it will become more and more rain, at least southern parts that have warnings, says meteorologist Maria Augutis.
Slippery in Värmland and Dalarna
Maria Augutis says that it is difficult to specify exactly where and when the slip can occur.
– But above all, I would say that the north of Värmland and above Dalarna because it is where the precipitation will fall in greater quantity and the boundary between snow and rain is very fine.
– Further east, Dalsland, Västmanland, where it will probably melt quite quickly. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful in these areas. If you see snow settling, don’t go out without winter tires.
Up to 15 centimeters of snow
In Gävleborg, Västmanland and Örebro, the amounts are small, up to two inches, where snow turns into southern rain in the afternoon.
In northern Värmland, Dalarna and Västernorrland, two to four inches of snow are expected, but even there the snowfall turns into rain later on Tuesday.
In Jämtland, by contrast, up to 6 inches of snow can fall on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
More snow on Wednesday
On Wednesday, the area of precipitation is moving north and “a lot” of snow can be expected in south and central Norrland, according to Maria Augutis.
– Then it will stop more over Jämtland and Härjedalen, while along the Norrland coast, that is, Medelpad and Ångermanland, it will rain mainly, he says.
– It’s too early for tomorrow’s warnings, it will probably arrive in the afternoon. But it could be two to six inches even in North Norrland when this progresses tomorrow.
Warm in the south
As the snowy area moves north, warmer air follows, and with it, much milder temperatures.
– Tomorrow, in the middle of the day, the models show that the snow will be somewhere over central Norrland and southern Norrbotten County, says Maria Augutis and continues:
– Behind this snowy area, that is, further south, very soft air has entered. It is wet, there is a bit of haze and fog, it may be some drizzle, but the precipitation has moved up a bit over Norrland.
Already on Thursday, the temperature can reach up to 15 to 16 degrees in the south, and then mainly in the southeast of Götaland.
