The attack in the troubled state of Katsina occurred according to police late on Friday. Gunmen attacked the school in Kankara district at 9.40pm local time, in what is believed to be an attempted kidnapping.

In a statement, Gambo Isah, a spokesman for the local police, said that the police opened fire on the attackers, prompting the students to flee.

According to local AFP sources, several students have been abducted, while two sources told Reuters that about half of the roughly 800 students at the school are missing.

Now the police are working together with the military to find out if the attackers managed to kidnap some children. According to the police, it has not been established that there are students missing.

They have not yet been counted. And the students are said to have gone home after the attack.

President Muhammadu Buhari writes in a statement that the military located the alleged kidnappers and that a shooting broke out, where the military received air support.

Katsina state has big problems with criminal gangs who, among other things, feed on robberies and kidnappings in the hope of ransom.
