The warring parties in Libya have reached an agreement on a “permanent” ceasefire, says the Libyan UN mission Unsmil on Facebook.
The message comes after five days of negotiations.
“This achievement is a major turning point for peace and stability in Libya,” writes Unsmil.
UN envoy Stephanie Williams said in a live broadcast after the agreement was signed that she hopes the ceasefire will allow refugees inside and outside the country to return to their homes.
– The road was long and sometimes difficult. Your patriotism was your way forward, and you could agree to a ceasefire, he says.
The two boards, abbreviated GNA and LNA in English, have reached similar agreements several times before that have not been honored.
Libya has been divided by conflict since dictator Muammar Gaddafi was toppled and assassinated in 2011. Weapons and warriors have also spread to other countries in Africa, while lawlessness provides a breeding ground for human trafficking to large scale to Europe.
