For the first time so far, the session of the Nordic Council has been canceled. Instead, the Nordic leaders met through a liaison together with the specially invited guest, UN Secretary General António Guterres.

The theme of the meeting was the crown crisis and the challenges facing the world.

– Today we are facing a time marked by a serious crisis and great uncertainty. The world is facing a developing pandemic that has exacerbated many weaknesses in our societies, said António Guterres.

He continued:

– At the same time, climate change continues and affects nations. Both crises require a new effective multilateralism for a global approach to the problems that affect us all.

“Ambitious Champions”

As in the case of the Covid-19 crisis, he emphasized that no one is immune to climate change either.

– We are doing everything possible to secure ambitious climate measures to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.

– It is important that we rebuild the economy after the pandemic through effective climate measures that provide better jobs for millions of people, where cleaner and more efficient technology is promoted, Guterres continued.

He declared the importance of the Nordic countries’ cooperation for climate.

– Here we count the Nordic countries that have historically been ambitious champions of climate action. The world needs your leadership more than ever.

– I am hopeful that the members of the Nordic Council want to be global models for the green and sustainable recovery after the pandemic, said António Guterres.

Equipped for crisis

When it was Löfven’s turn to speak, he affirmed the importance of international cooperation in the crisis and that the Nordic countries want to participate and contribute.

– Strong multilateral cooperation means that we are better equipped to resolve crises. I would also like to thank the Secretary General of the United Nations and all the UN agencies for their leadership during the pandemic.

Löfven also pointed to several points that he believes are of great interest to everyone in the pandemic and will also be of great interest in the future, including the fact that a fair distribution of the vaccine must first be ensured.

– In the Nordic countries, we say that no one is safe until everyone is safe, said Löfven and continued:

– We must also accelerate the green transition, which is also a very important part of the economic recovery, so we must comply in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

In addition to Löfven and Guterres, the Danish leaders Mette Fredriksen, Bardur á Stieg Nielsen from the Faroe Islands, Kim Kielsen from Greenland, Sanna Marin from Finland, Erna Solberg from Norway, Veronica Thörnroos from Åland and Katrín Jakobsdóttir from Iceland spoke.
