UN Secretary General António Guterres expresses “great concern” about the tense situation in Myanmar, where threatening military statements have raised concerns about possible coup plans.
In his statement, Guterres called on “all actors to refrain from any form of incitement or provocation” and to “follow democratic norms and respect the result of the November 8 elections.”
The country’s powerful military claims that there was fraud in the elections, in which the ruling Aung San Suu Kyi party won a landslide victory.
And as February 1 approaches, the date when the newly elected parliament will meet for the first time, the military has raised its voice.
A spokesman warned this week that it may be “necessary to repeal the constitution” for irregularities and that one may be forced to “act.”
Just a decade ago, Myanmar emerged from nearly 50 years of military rule. But power is still divided between the civil government and the country’s generals.
