Around noon on Friday, the attack took place near where the Charlie Hebdo newspaper previously had its premises in eastern Paris. Information on how many people have been injured differs.

Initially, various media outlets, including the AP, reported that four people had been injured. But according to the newspaper La Figaro and Reuters, it should be two wounded, where Reuters claims that one of them has serious but not fatal injuries.

Two people arrested

Le Parisien also reports that two were injured and that they both worked for a production company.

– Two colleagues smoked a cigarette at the foot of the building, on the street. I heard screams. I went to the window and saw one of my companions, covered in blood, being chased by a man with a machete in the street. We know that two of our colleagues are injured, but we do not know more than that at the moment, a witness tells Le Parisien.

The information on how many were arrested has also differed, where both one and two perpetrators have been denounced. But according to the latest information from Reuters and La Figaro, now two people are arrested.

The first person was arrested on the steps of the Opera Bastille, several blocks south of the twelfth district. According to unconfirmed information, he had traces of blood on his clothes. The other must have been arrested in a metro station according to Figaro.

Investigated as a terrorist attack

French police signed early Twitter urging the public to stay away from the area.

Reuters also reports that police are initially investigating the incident as a terrorist attack. In connection with the attack, a suspicious package was also found at the scene, but later found to be harmless.

Shortly after the incident, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin and Prime Minister Jean Castex announced that they would hold a crisis meeting.

The reason is not clear

Five years ago, in January 2015, Charlie Hebdo was attacked, an attack that claimed twelve lives. A trial for that act has recently been held in Paris.

– Many people who have followed the trial have been affected by the testimonies that have come, says Christian Catomeris, foreign reporter in the SVT broadcast.

Several schools are said to have kept their children and students inside as a security measure after the attack.

The motive for today’s attack is still unclear.
