Two thirds of musicians in the UK are considering leaving their profession

Last week, a poll showed that one in three Swedish musicians is about to leave the profession. The survey was conducted by the freelance Musikcentrum Riks association.

Similar sounds are now being heard from the UK.

The music agency Encore has conducted a survey with 560 national musicians. Responses show that 64 percent are considering changing jobs, reports music magazine NME.

Concerts canceled

The reason is the difficult financial situation caused by the cancellation of concerts and festivals.

87 percent of musicians surveyed claim to have fewer concerts booked during the period from August to December of this year compared to 2019.

As in Sweden, live concerts are a vital income for musicians in the UK.

– Music streaming does not help musicians pay the bills. Many of my favorite bands make all their money by playing festivals, says Horace Trubridge, secretary general of the British Musical Union.

More research has been done

In April, Musical Union conducted a survey that showed that 19 percent of its members were considering leaving music.

Horace Trubridge said then that the number of musicians is difficult to see and that the number was probably “significantly higher than that.”
