In mid-June, two new red pandas were born in Nordens Ark.

Here they rest safely in their nest, but throughout the world the species is threatened.

– We want to spread the knowledge, says Ewa Wikberg, Nordens Ark zoological director.

In mid-June, two new pandas were born in Nordens Ark.

Ewa Wikberg is very pleased with the new addition of the red pandas and hopes that it will now spark more interest among visitors and the general public, which ultimately means that the species can be saved.

– These two pandas are important for the survival of the species. Mainly for the opportunity to inform and spread knowledge, he says.

Just two months later, the cubs rest safely in the nest with their mother, who is also feeling well.

– While they are in the nest box, we do not enter and bother more than necessary. They will be there for a week or two, depending on how brave they are. Sometime in the next week they should look to the future and then it will be a few more weeks before the children explore the outdoors.

“There are name suggestions”

At the end of September, the idea is that visitors can see the pandas in their enclosure.

– Since puppies are born in this environment, they are also used to all outside noise. At the same time, the nest box and also the trees will always be there for your safety. If you are lucky, visitors can see them on the site in late September.

Since vets haven’t been able to spend enough time with the pups, the pandas have yet to get their names.

– I know animal handlers are sitting on some name suggestions, but it will probably come out as soon as we see how they move and look.

As for the long-term plan for the red pandas, there is still a lot to do, but according to Wikberg, it looks quite promising.

– At the moment we are collaborating with the “Red Panda Red”, to help the local population with, for example, climate efficient stoves for the residents of Nepal. The purpose is to avoid widespread deforestation. What we do know is that there are about 2,500 pandas left in the area, and if we work hard over several years, we have high hopes that we can save the species. I’d say we were almost on time.
