Firefighters are working to put out the flames at a warehouse building in Badalona, Spain, where many migrants sought refuge.
At least two people were killed and 19 injured when an abandoned warehouse occupied by immigrants caught fire on the outskirts of Barcelona.
The fire broke out overnight until Thursday and was under control by morning. However, parts of the building have collapsed and there is a risk of a landslide, according to Spanish authorities.
It is not uncommon for the undocumented to sleep in old warehouses in the industrial district of Badalona in Barcelona.
“We have known for years that the occupation of this house could end in tragedy,” the mayor of Badalona, Xavier García Albiol, told reporters.
It’s unclear how many people were in the building when the fire started, but several made it out. In the past, up to 180 people have spent the night there.
