More than 90 people have been infected in a massive outbreak of covid-19 at a famous Orthodox Christian monastery in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev. Two infected monks have died, says Archbishop Kliment Vecherya.

The 93 infected in the Petjerskak Monastery, also known as the Cave Monastery and founded in the 11th century, account for almost a fifth of all cases confirmed so far in Kiev.

In March, Father Pavel, the monastery’s highest-ranking priest, urged believers to “rush to church and hug each other,” despite authorities’ advice to celebrate worship services via video link. .

The priest then changed and now calls the virus “the plague of the 21st century.”

The monastery, where some 250 people live, is in quarantine and all services are transmitted.

Vitalij Klytjko, the mayor of Kiev, says that doctors with portable X-rays and test kits should visit the monastery and analyze how many people have been infected.

Ukraine has a total of 3,102 confirmed infected, including 495 in Kiev, and 93 deaths.
