The Director of Health in the Västra Götaland region, Ann Söderström, has made a big impression on the latest results of the region’s large sample of employees in senior housing. The tests were performed on staff who themselves felt they were generally healthy.

– They showed symptoms so mild that they could have gone to work. In normal cases they were gone, Ann Söderström tells DN.

Now tests showed that of the 650 tests, 24 percent were sick on covid-19.

Ann Söderström is surprised at how many people carried the virus when 650 employees were tested in the region's nursing homes.

At his press conference On Thursday, the Public Health Agency outlined its updated opinion on the need for oral protection for employees in the care of the elderly. Today, the authority considers that the need must be decided locally and sees no obstacles to its possible introduction as a routine.

– I say the same: Do companies think that oral protection is taken, so it should be introduced, but I don’t think it really solves the problem? The results we got from the tests are mainly a very strong signal that you should not go to work at all, even if you only feel mild symptoms, says Ann Söderström.

Deputy infectious surgeon Leif Dotevall is a little more encouraging for the idea of oral protection for older care staff in the future.

– We have around 260 residents who do not have an infection and it is clear that in this situation you may want to recommend both braces and a strap. Is there something this pandemic taught us? How fragile is the situation for the elderly? We may have to step up.

But who is going to decide that?

– Every business must do that. Leadership is gaining importance now, says Leif Dotevall.
