The natural gas deposits that Turkey discovered in the Black Sea in July, and later, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were the largest in the country’s history, are even larger than previously thought.
Erdogan said on Saturday, aboard a drillship in the Black Sea, that the find amounts to about 405 billion cubic meters, 85 billion more than previously announced.
Turkey believes it can start drilling for natural gas in 2023.
Shells in Svarta The sea will not cause Turkey to curtail its controversial activities in the Mediterranean, which has previously had the country on a collision course with its neighbor and NATO partner Greece.
A Turkish research ship is conducting seismic surveys south of the Greek island of Kastellorizo.
Erdogan said on Saturday that Turkey will defend its interests in the Mediterranean but also that it does not want to infringe on the rights of other countries.
