The images show how large amounts of debris cover the surface of the water and the shoreline in Omoa.

– This wave of debris that came from the Motagua River really surprised us and, although it caused problems, it has not stopped our work, says Lilian Rivera, an official of the country’s environmental authority according to the New York Post.

In addition to environmental damage, Omoa residents worry that the “garbage tsunami” could scare tourists and cause economic damage.

Trash fills the beach in Honduras

The mayor of the city of Omoa has appealed to the Honduran authorities.

– We want them to recognize the damage that this is doing to ecology, tourism and the economy, says Mayor Ricardo Álvaro to the newspaper Tiempo.

According to the country’s environmental authority, they take the problem seriously.

– On Friday we will have a meeting between the two countries, and we want it to end well for both, because we are tired of this. We want more than minutes, we want it to be resolved. We do not want more garbage on the beaches of Omoa, says Lilian Rivera according to Tiempo.
