Despite the attacks on drugs and dementia, behind-the-scenes advisers have forced Donald Trump to take Joe Biden seriously.
A 30-page folder contains the strategy that the chair practices every day before the debate.
They have been in each other’s shoes for several years, Donald Trump and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. Back in 2018, Biden said he would have spanked Trump in the schoolyard if they went to high school together. The president responded that Biden is “weak, both physically and mentally” and “doesn’t know me, but would pack fast and hard, crying.”
Since then, the tone has hardened and not the other way around.
Donald Trump has repeatedly questioned Joe Biden’s mental abilities and suggested he might be insane. “He barely knows he’s alive” is a phrase he’s used multiple times and says that Biden is trapped in his basement and doesn’t dare to come out.
Dangerous strategy
He has also mocked the opponent’s efforts in the primary election debates this spring. A strategy that the president’s adviser believes is dangerous and that Trump may fall into his own trap by lowering expectations to such an extent that it is more or less enough for Joe Biden to appear to be seen as a winner. Since then, Trump has continued to rage against the opponent. He requested a drug test from Biden before the debate and called him “a stupid guy” during a campaign speech this weekend. During a press conference Sunday night, he was asked about the drug allegations and repeated the attacks that Biden must have done something to have been much better during the final debate against Bernie Sanders.

30 page binder
But behind the scenes, advisers are doing everything they can to get Trump to take Biden seriously ahead of Tuesday night’s debate, writes the New York Times. The staff has compiled a 30-page binder of all the important points they want me to address in the attacks on Biden during the debate.
Your staff have primarily used downtime on Air Force One en route to campaign meetings or official assignments to pepper you with questions you may have during debate and go through the folder, the newspaper writes.
Among the main points are the allegations of sexual abuse that Tara Reade made against Biden and attacks on her son Hunter.
I had bacon burgers
Trump has had a couple of meetings about the debate with, among others, former governor and presidential candidate Chris Christie and aide Hope Hicks. But according to the newspaper, he is not a great friend of long preparations. Before the debates with Hillary Clinton in 2016, he played golf and ate bacon burgers with his advisers during strategy meetings.
This year is more disciplined. In an interview with Fox News yesterday, he admitted that, despite portraying the opponent as insane, he practices before the debate every day.
– When you are president, you understand everything they are going to ask you. And they may not agree with you, but we’ve done a good job. We have created the strongest economy in the world. And now it comes back. We close it. “We saved millions and millions of lives doing what I did,” Trump said.
Joe Biden has spent most of the past few days preparing for dust with Trump on Tuesday night. His adviser expects him to repeat the performance of the 2012 vice-presidential debate, as he is believed to have sparked Obama’s re-election campaign after the president’s poor first debate against Mitt Romney.
– Obama failed in the debate and there was a lot of pressure on Biden to comply and he did really well, an Obama campaign adviser at the time tells The Guardian.

The debate can decide
Bill Daley, who has been Obama’s chief of staff and worked for Biden, believes that the first debate can, in principle, decide the whole battle.
“We have a polarized country, everyone knows who to vote for, except a small group of people, who will see the first debate and then have an opinion,” he told The Guardian.
Biden’s staff hopes to make the debate about the corona pandemic, about all the Americans who died with the virus and that the dismantling of Obamacare, which could become a reality if Trump’s candidate for the Supreme Court is approved, could make the population even more vulnerable to the disease.
However, Democrats worry that Biden may not be able to remain calm if Trump attacks his son Hunter. According to the New York Times, Biden has previously struggled to answer questions about his son’s assignments abroad and whether there have been conflicts of interest and corruption in his business.
Republican strategist Brett O’Donnell believes Trump will pressure Biden by interrupting, calling out nicknames and physically dominating the scene.
“No one has been able to figure out how to debate Donald Trump because he is so unconventional,” he told the New York Times.
Sunday night’s revelation in the New York Times, where the president’s remarks are presented in detail, may, however, override strategic plans for the debate. It reveals, among other things, that Trump in 2016, when he became president, only paid 7,000 SEK in taxes.
