China believes that the crown pandemic has changed the conditions for the country’s trade agreement with the United States. But Donald Trump does not intend to renegotiate the agreement signed in January.
– I’m not interested in that. Not even a little grand, Trump said Monday.
China is said to be dissatisfied with the so-called Phase 1 agreement with the United States. The country has not officially requested a renegotiation, but state media in the country report that advisers have urged the government to revoke the agreement.
It won’t happen, says the President of the United States.
– We signed an agreement. I also heard that they want to renegotiate it, to get a better deal for them. Now let’s see if China lives up to its part of the deal, Donald Trump said Monday.
Trump has repeatedly complained at press conferences about the coronavirus about China’s handling of the virus and its spread, and has threatened new sanctions. The president, among others, accuses China of taking too long to warn the outside world about the virus, saying that the country is therefore responsible for the pandemic and the global economic crisis that followed.
Under the agreement, the United States will not increase sanctions against China, against China that increases its imports of US goods by $ 200 billion compared to 2017 levels.
On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Liu He and United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer agreed to try to create an atmosphere that would allow them to achieve goals previously set out in the Phase 1 deal.
The signed agreement is the first phase in what both countries hope will be more. In January, they noted that new negotiations were underway, but that was before the crown pandemic broke out.
“Our relationship with China right now has probably never been better,” Trump said on January 21 during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
