The President of the United States, Donald Trump.
President Donald Trump says he plans to stop issuing so-called green cards, which give the holder the right to work and stay in the United States, for 60 days. A presidential decree on this is being drafted and can be signed as early as Wednesday, US media reports.
However, Trump has strayed from the broader immigration stop he tweeted on Monday, which would also have included guest workers. This after protests by industry representatives, writes The New York Times.
The move, which has been criticized by Democrats, is due to the crown pandemic and is aimed at protecting domestic jobs.
“Pausing immigration will help put unemployed Americans on the front line of work when the United States reopens,” Trump said Tuesday night during his daily press conference on fighting the new coronavirus.
After 60 days of stopping, the measure must be evaluated.
