All mail sent to the White House is surveyed at another address before reaching its recipients, and it was during this survey that the contents of the package were discovered.

Subsequently two tests were carried out on the contents of the package and this confirmed that the package contained ricin. The toxic protein can cause vomiting, internal bleeding, shortness of breath, and lead to death.

The intelligence service will now investigate who may be behind the shipment, reports CNN.

The New York Times reports that investigators suspect the package may have been shipped from Canada. There are currently no suspects.

Suspicious grandfatherOn several previous occasions, White House staff have been dispatched.

In 2013, a package containing the poison was sent to then-US President Barack Obama, even then the poison was discovered in a routine investigation. An actress from Texas was later sentenced to 18 years in prison after admitting she sent the package.
