US President Donald Trump pardons his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, he announced on Twitter.
Flynn has admitted that he lied to the FBI about his conversations with a Russian diplomat before Trump’s inauguration in 2017. He was forced to resign after less than a month in the position of security adviser after the talks became known. . He had also misled Vice President Mike Pence about his contacts with the Russian diplomat.
Former General Flynn was the only one in the Trump administration to be formally charged in the extensive legal investigation conducted by special counsel Robert Mueller.
Flynn pleaded guilty and cooperated with the FBI. Then he changed his mind, withdrew his confession, and pleaded not guilty. In 2019, he changed attorneys, again emphasizing that he was innocent and exposed to misconduct by the authorities.
Mueller’s office stated that Flynn cooperated with authorities and that he should receive little to no incarceration.
A judge decided in February this year to postpone the sentence for now.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that Flynn was subjected to a witch hunt.
