At least 33 people were reported to have lost their lives in the ongoing fires along the west coast of the United States. Oregon, California and Washington are still ravaged by fire.
Stefan Åsberg, SVT’s US correspondent on the site in California, claims the weather has been favorable for a few days now that it hasn’t blown as much.
– The smoke layer also increases humidity, making it easier to extinguish fires, says Åsberg in SVT’s Morgonstudion.
Trump is visiting California
On Monday, President Trump will meet with rescue service leaders in California. According to Åsberg, the visits are mainly because the president wants to show that he cares.
– There are a huge number of Americans who are affected by fires in one way or another, says Åsberg.
During a prominent Sunday, the president indicated that the fires were caused by poor forest management.
“Remember it’s about forestry,” Trump said.
Åsberg: Not surprising
Åsberg believes that the president decided to focus on forest management rather than climate is not particularly surprised. Most people agree that humans caused the fires in some way, but in terms of the impact of the weather, opinions differ.
– Donald Trump has not pushed the climate issue at all. And it’s an issue that hasn’t been particularly high on the agenda in recent months either, but if fires continue to plague even the final sprint of the presidential election movement, it will affect it, Åsberg says.
