It was at the end of the debate between incumbent President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden that Trump spoke perhaps the most controversial words of the night.
“Proud Guys: Stand Back and Be Prepared.”
The Proud Boys are known as a hate group, targeting minorities such as blacks, Jews, Muslims, and women. That the president exhorted them to be ready, “stand by” sparked a great debate.
But now Trump has retracted the statement. During a brief press conference on the White House lawn, he responds to a reporter who asks him what he meant by the statement.
– I don’t know who the proud guys are. You have to define them for me because I really don’t know who they are, replied the president.
When asked if he condemns white power groups in general, he replied that he “condemns all kinds of groups that should be condemned” and that the real problem lies with left-wing extremist movements, such as Antifa.
