Under normal circumstances, the fall holidays are a popular week for Swedes to escape everyday life and travel; both in Sweden and abroad. Due to the corona pandemic, the situation this year is different. Several travel companies believe that although more people choose to travel this fall than in spring, the demand is still lower than before the pandemic.
That the infection spread It’s on the rise once again in Europe and tightening restrictions may be one reason travelers are cautious when booking travel. That is the opinion of the SAS press manager, Freja Annamatz, who sees a change in the pattern of consumption among his clients.
– I think uncertainty means that you book your trip much later than usual, says Freja Annamatz.
Normally, SAS has around 800 flights per day. Since the corona pandemic, the number of departures has more than halved and currently hovers around 350.
Despite generally low demand for travel, Freja Annamts says SAS is under increased pressure during the fall vacation week.
– We have more reservations during that week than others. This may be because many Swedes have accommodation in southern Europe that they want to visit, says Freja Annamatz.
The Giant Ship Destination Gotlands Reserves have risen steadily since mid-June, when restrictions were lifted. In June, the company lost 50 percent of the previous year’s travelers compared to August, where instead they lost about 20 percent from the previous year.
Throughout the summer, the company has noticed a change in the buying and travel behavior of customers.
– Visitors stay longer on the island and Gotlanders travel much less. But what we mostly see is that after the crown you book your trip very late, says Adam Jacobsson, Marketing Manager for Destination Gotland.
There are still places on departures from Destinations Gotland during the fall break. Adam Jacobsson is not worried, but believes that the places will gradually fill up.
– Every time we walk in and look forward a month, it seems like we’re behind on reservations, but it never really happens because many book so late, says Adam Jacobsson.
He says Gotland has been a popular destination during the summer.
– When we launched the trips in June, our systems failed, we have probably never seen so much pressure.
But despite that, the company has lost a total of around 30 percent compared to the previous year, which corresponds to more than 500,000 travelers.
– This is partly because we have to limit the capacity of the ships and leave empty spaces between companies, says Adam Jacobsson.
