A train derailed in a tunnel in eastern Taiwan. At least 36 people are feared to have died and several other passengers have been taken to hospital, some with life-threatening injuries.

The train was heading from Hualien on the east coast to Taichung in western Taiwan when it derailed and an unknown number of train cars entered the tunnel walls.

“Preliminary visual observations have shown that many people show no signs of life,” the fire department announced in a first written statement.

The transport minister later stated that at least 36 people were believed to have died, according to Reuters.

Some 350 passengers are said to have traveled on the train.
