It was in December 2013 that the Brantafors water plant outside Kallinge in Blekinge was closed after excessive values of PFAS chemicals were found in the drinking water.
Since then, 165 individuals have filed a lawsuit against the municipal water company Miljöteknik for pumping contaminated water for decades. However, it took until February 8 of this year before the trial in Blekinge District Court began.
– Is this poisoning a personal injury? That is the main issue, said lawyer Göran Starkebo, who represents individuals, when the trial began.
The last one takes place today the day of the hearing, but the verdict is likely to be appealed to the Court of Appeal.
– We will take this to the Supreme Court if necessary. We are strong. Time is not an issue for us, Herman Afzelius, president of the PFAS association, told TT.
The municipality disputes liability for damages and both parties believe that they will find support for their case in both the Swedish and international investigation.
– There are legal elements in this case that are worth trying to a higher level. So the attorney in me says there are reasons to take this further, but I can’t comment in that capacity. I want us to get this over with, but with that said, I have a hard time seeing that the district court is the end point for this, municipal attorney Mathias Kågell-Landgren previously told TT.
