Ten foreign tourists in India who broke the Crown Quarantine in the city of Haridwar have received unusual punishment, reports the Times of India.
All ten were forced 500 times to write the phrase “I didn’t follow quarantine rules, I apologize.”
Vinod Sharma, the city’s police chief, located 20 km north of Delhi, says that many tourists have been seen strolling along the banks of the Ganges River over the past week and sitting in groups alongside him, despite strict quarantine rules and an attempt not to go outdoors unless necessary.
– So on Saturday we decided to punish sinners and therefore about ten tourists we met on the riverbank had to write the sentence down on paper as punishment, Sharma says.
Hotels and hostels where tourists live will also be penalized for leaving their homes.
About 600 tourists are said to be trapped in the nearby town of Rishikesh, at the foot of the Himalayas. All of India has been forced into quarantine for nearly three weeks and is reportedly about to extend the injunction for another two weeks starting on Tuesday.
