Sweden’s starting lineups at the European Championship have been turned into a snack bar.
Exaggerated, thinks Tomas Axnér.
-It is not football where you only have three substitutions, says the captain of the national team.
Against Spain last time, Isabelle Gulldén had to start on the bench and then played a minor role in the match. It hadn’t happened in ten years in a key championship game.
The bank attracted a lot of attention.
Against Russia on Monday, Tomas Axnér opted to replace almost all of the initial seven, which also became a kind of snack bar.
Axnér now reacts to the focus on the starting lineups.
-It’s not football where you only have three substitutions, he says.
“We don’t have Neagu”
Do you think too much attention has been paid from the outside?
– Yes, I absolutely do. We have 16 players in this squad. If you choose to play with a 15-20 minute lineup or another formation in a different period of the game, you don’t give it much thought.
But will this be talked about more when it is Gulldén who ends up in the center?
– Of course it will be and it is not the case that I do not understand the angle. But as I said from the start: we have an even team and the strengths of the team and the players are distributed differently. It’s about how we should use strengths based on the game plan we have chosen. For me, that is not so strange. We do not have Cristina Neagu or Ana Gros who can score 14 goals in a match and around which the rival builds all its tactics, but we have to look for the right one in our cards.
The full starting seven was replaced early
Gulldén was like that back from the beginning against Russia.
– We had the ambition to play with a left-handed right-hander (Dano) and a left-handed shooter (Thorleifsdóttir) and there Bella is very good at putting games and aiming for them. We could play starts that Russia had never seen. I don’t think the Russian goalkeeper had any clips on Dano, Elin Hansson or Thorleifsdóttir.
But almost all of the starting seven were replaced after the nightmare started the first 10-15 minutes.
– There were many counterattacks in that phase. It was part of the plan to sneak into some players and we didn’t change because it went wrong, says Axnér.
