On Christmas Eve, just over four and a half years after the British referendum, the EU and the UK finally agreed on a trade deal to mitigate the effects of Britain’s exit from the EU.
At 9:30 in the morning on Wednesday, it is time for the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the Permanent Council of the EU, Charles Michel, to sign the agreement.
The document will then be transferred to London, where Prime Minister Boris Johnson will add his signature.
Later in the day, the British Parliament is expected to pass the deal in a vote. But the green light from the European Parliament is delayed as its members want to review the agreement in detail before giving the green light.
However, Parliament is not required for the agreement to enter into force on a provisional basis.
