The fact that Sweden lacked four leading players, Amanda Zahui, Regan Magarity, Louice Halvarsson and Kalis Loyd, didn’t matter against Israel.
In his absence, the experienced sisters Frida and Elin Eldebrink took on a great responsibility. The sisters totaled 20 of Sweden’s 22 points in the first period, Frida 15 and Elin 5, and played an important role in Sweden leading by twelve points.
– It’s a dream start. Given all the missing players, there is a risk of self-confidence being shattered. And then it’s even more important to get off to a good start and this start is perfect, said SVT sports expert Elisabeth Egnell after first period.
Frida Eldebrink agrees.
– The beginning was great. We entered aggressively both in attack and defense and I think that was the key to making such a good game and winning so great, he tells SVT Sport.
Qualifier against Montenegro ends
Sweden was superior in the second leg and had strong attacking play against the basket throughout the match. This, in combination with a stable defensive game, meant that the Swedes could pull away significantly.
– Defense is great. There is a personal responsibility and everyone keeps their player in front of them, Egnell says.
Frida Eldebrink landed with 28 points and became the best scorer of the match. He also got seven out of eleven three, more than 60 percent.
– He felt good and we played well in training and we made the best of this situation. The newcomers have taken in all the information, so it felt good, says Frida Eldebrink.
Then Montenegro waits in February in the last qualifier of the European Championship. Sweden can afford to lose and still make it to the European Championship.
– It feels very promising. You now have a golden position in front of you, Egnell says.
The group runners-up and five of the top nine group runners-up go directly to the European Championship.
