GOTHENBURG. The ticket to the European Championship for the men’s team is worth just under SEK 100 million.

The corresponding sum for the women’s national team when advancing to the 2022 European Championship is zero crowns.

– I have said for a long time that FIFA and UEFA must step up, says Kosovar Asllani.

The women’s team in soccer and money has been a historical obstacle. Gender equality is taking a step forward in football, but financially it is slow.

The economic explanation is based on the fact that the money that goes into men’s football is infinitely much higher.

When Sweden qualified for the European Men’s Soccer Championship, which was due to be decided this summer but was postponed by the pandemic permit, it in itself brought the Swedish Football Association an income of just under SEK 100 million.

During the championship there is more to collect. A quarter-final would mean, for example, an additional SEK 30 million.

When the Swedish women’s team in Gothenburg on Tuesday night decided the qualifying group for the European Championship with 2-0 against Iceland and booked the European Championship party in the summer of 2022, it was a significant move for Swedish football. .

“Important for our brand”

The value is in many ways, but not yet in pure crowns.

– The actual promotion to the championship currently unfortunately does not provide any income to SvFF, but it is when we participate in the championship that we receive a supposed compensation. But progress means we participate, says Håkan Sjöstrand, general secretary of the Swedish Football Association.

By the 2019 World Cup, FIFA had more than doubled the prize money on the women’s side and Sweden received more than SEK 20 million for its bronze spot. It remains to be seen how much prize money there will be in the European Championship.

– Past championships, we have been informed about six months before the tournament starts about what all the championship compensation looks like, so we have to wait. Of course, with a reservation about how the situation in the world related to the coronavirus is seen, which can affect in different ways, says Sjöstrand.

Kosovar Asllani is one of the players who emphasized the importance of the clearer financial efforts of FIFA and Uefa.

– Must be. That is what we strive for all the time. The association can only do its part and show what Sweden stands for and that it wants to invest. But then it’s about FIFA and Uefa investing even more and leading the way, which they don’t do now and the players have to suffer, he says.

What does it mean for Swedish football that Sweden goes to the European Championship?

– It means a lot that we qualify for the European Championship. We are one of the nations that have qualified for the vast majority of the playoffs, so for the continued development of women’s football in Sweden it is of course very important, says Håkan Sjöstrand and continues:
– Of course, it is important that we continue the success of last year’s World Cup with additional championships. With the attention that follows to the championships and the great interest that exists around those occasions, of course it is extremely important that we arrive and be part of those contexts. It is also important that our brand gets a receipt in the increasingly tough competition that we get it right in Swedish football.

For players, no good ranking bonuses await them. In their individual agreements, however, players have SvFF match prizes.

The European Championship in England will be played in 2022.
