In an interview with SVT Nyheter, the opposition leader says she sees the meeting with Linde as positive.
– Sweden is one of the most committed countries. I am sure that the Swedish government will react to our demands for higher penalties. And that they pressured Lukashenko financially, so that the police violence can end, says Svetlana Tichanovskaya.
The discussion revolved around the kind of support that Sweden can offer to the opposition movement.
– It applies to continuous sanctions to operate in the EU and include more people responsible for the violence, and also companies, Ann Linde tells SVT Nyheter.
Sweden could help redirect aid so that there are no EU government organizations.
– Sweden is one of the biggest donors and an opportunity to influence. It is important that Belarus feel that it has the support of Sweden and it is important to come together to see what kind of support they need to become a democratic country, says Ann Linde and continues:
– I must make it clear that we demand an end to all violence and that all political prisoners be released, says Ann Linde.
“Pick up the rhetoric”
Third-party support is important to Belarusians.
– The escalation of violence has forced us to ask countries that are not alien to our situation to raise the rhetoric and reinforce the demands on Lukashenko, to stop the violence, says Svetlana Tichanovskaya.
