Three soldiers belonging to the Cameroonian army have been arrested, suspected of killing civilians.

The soldiers are part of a force fighting against separatists in the western part of the Central African country. In connection with a shooting in the village of Ngarbuh in February, soldiers discovered that three women and ten children had died.

Then they should have tried to hide their tracks by burning parts of the village in a panic, the government says.

First, the army refused to intervene in the event. But ever since the United Nations Office Ocha raised the alarm, admissions were allowed, but they described it all as an accident where fuel tanks had exploded.

According to the government, several other soldiers in the force will receive disciplinary punishment.

Cameroon is the scene of violent clashes between government forces and English-speaking separatists, who in October 2017 proclaimed their independence.

The English-speaking minority, which constitutes about a fifth of the population, believes that the French-speaking majority discriminates against it. The conflict has cost around 3,000 lives since 2017, while hundreds of thousands have fled their homes.
