The news of the three deceased children was given by New York Governor Andrew Cuomo at Saturday’s press conference on the coronal situation.
He told us about a five-year-old boy Friday, the state’s first known death with symptoms reminiscent of Kawasaki disease or toxic shock syndrome, which in turn is believed to have been caused by covid-19.
“It may have been going on for weeks.”
Cuomo did not reveal anything at the press conference about the ages of the three children or the circumstances surrounding the deaths. But he said that with growing concern he sees a new risk for children regarding the spread of the corona virus. Until now, children have generally been found to show very mild symptoms of covid-19.
– We are no longer sure that this is the case. Chances are this has been going on for several weeks and has not been diagnosed to be covid-19 related, Andrew Cuomo says.
The symptoms of Kawasaki disease are fever, rashes, and swollen glands. In more severe cases, blood vessels can also become inflamed where vital organs, such as the heart and its coronary arteries, are also affected. It is unknown what causes the disease and the syndrome generally affects only one child for every 100,000 children, most of them under the age of five.

Similar cases have been reported in both the UK and Italy, where experts are investigating a possible link between covid-19 and an unexpectedly large number of children affected by inflammatory symptoms. Some of them have died.
In the United States, the death toll now exceeds 78,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. New York is the nation’s infection center with more than a third of deaths.
