It was on Wednesday last week that the men were arrested on the outskirts of Jönköping after an investigation and reconnaissance work that has been going on since last summer. They were arrested this weekend. All three deny the crime, but police describe the investigation as good.
– We had our robberies in Skaraborg from July 22 to August 20. That’s what we started working on, says Marlene Andersson Wikman.
It soon emerged that other regions had also been affected, but they had not requested GPS positioning for mobile phones there.
– And we could only look back a certain number of weeks in time. Therefore, we were forced to limit the investigation to May-November. But we think the league has developed over years, says the group director.
Thefts for large sums
Since May alone, the stolen goods will be worth just over a million. If the police are right and the league has been active for several years, it is probably multimillion-dollar sums.
Stealing saddles may seem different. But it’s not that strange, according to Marlene Andersson Wikman:
– Theft of horse saddles is often very lucrative, especially abroad. Swedish horses tend to buy more expensive things for their horses than for themselves, I can sign it myself! We have thin saddles that require a high resale value.
The average value of stolen saddles is around 20,000 SEK, but there are saddles that are “only” worth 5,000 SEK, and others that can cost 150,000 SEK.
The police solve riddles
The fact that the suspects could be arrested is due to extensive investigative work. The police have studied series of previous crimes and have seen how thieves proceeded and how they traveled in and out of the country on pure robbery tours. Investigators also cooperate, among others, with border police and ferry companies.
– Our crime analysts and coordinators have followed patterns and put together puzzles. It’s great to see what you can find if you really search and get the right equipment and data. The investigation shows how clever the thieves have been, but also what good police we have, says Marlene Andersson Wikman.
None of the stolen property has yet been found.
This is how Alexandra Erikssson, operations manager for the Lurbo riding club, described the feeling when the club was hit. (That incident cannot currently be linked to the three detainees):
